McClouds Job Creation

In Mpumalanga there is a wool processing business that’s creating jobs and providing skills to people in and around Chrissiesmeer. This area is one of South Africa’s top wool producing regions, and some of the wool is used to make wool filled duvets. These duvets are to be found in a quaint, historical building that echoes a time long gone.

Wool you lie with me
Be sure to visit McCloud’s, a pillow and duvet shop in one of the old sandstone buildings in the main drag. Luxurious woollen duvets are made by hand and it’s said to be the only factory of its kind in the country. The 100-per-cent wool-filled, cotton casings are hypo-allergenic, super-warm and, at less than R1 000 for a king-size duvet, very well priced.

The Grass and Wetlands Region of Mpumalanga is essentially a farming area, with a focus on sheep farming.

The area around Chrissiesmeer is one of South Africa’s top wool producing regions, and while much of the high quality wool product is exported, some stays – to make top quality  ’home-grown’ products such as McClouds 100% Wool-filled Duvets.

Quite unlike the synthetic fill found in most duvets, wool-filled duvets regulate body temperature and stay fluffy. They are cool in summer, warm in winter, hypoallergenic, totally natural and they maintain their shape. Besides all that – shopping at McClouds is what shopping should be – it’s a quaint historical building that harks back to the days when free-roaming packs of dirty-faced children bought ‘candy’ out of glass bottles in the ‘local store’ and didn’t have to go home till it got dark…and the word ‘synthetic’ hadn’t been invented yet.
